This year Mission Bay High School started their first season of Girls’ Lacrosse, 2014! The sport opened up because Kylie Kruger (an experienced lacrosse player, 9th grade) came up with the idea. She had been playing for years and made it her mission to play on a high school lacrosse team, and she achieved it. Because it was MBHS’s first year, the school didn’t know how the turn up would be, but it proved to be a success with around 20 girls joining the team!

Most girls had no experience to begin with, but all did great nonetheless. Over the course of 8 weeks, all team members showed incredible improvement and the team showed great coordination. Girls from all grades showed up, and this season proved that a lot can improve in two and half months!

Kelly Fromm, a former USD lacrosse player, coached the girls’ team this season with the assistance of Kalya , who also played growing up. She had wanted to coach Lacrosse since she had started playing in college, and since last year was her last year at USD, this year was the first year she could coach. With the opening at Mission Bay, she gladly took it. She believes the season went awesome, saying that the team killed two teams that were just starting out like our own Bucs. She also said that although in most games the scoreboard didn’t show that the girls did very well, she believes they did.

Coach Kelly’s favorite game was MBHS vs. La Jolla Country Day, going so far as to call it a defining moment for the Lady Bucs, as it was the first time their defense came together and communicated. The Lady Bucs lost that game, but played to the best of their ability, and it really showed.

Coach Kelly has been so proud of the improvement the team has faced. From dropping balls the first day to playing as a cohesive team was amazing to her and Coach Kayla. Coach Kelly admitted she was a little nervous during pre-season because at these meetings only 5 or 6 girls showed up, so it was hard to tell who was actually interested in playing. She said Kylie Kruger did a great job of recruiting girls and they eventually had to stop accepting girls because there were so many, but she loved the fact that there were so many girls that were interested. In the future she would love to create a JV and Varsity team so that MBHS could continue to be competitive.

When asked about Lacrosse’s popularity among the kids and how well she thinks it’ll go next year, she said “It seems like there’s a lot of hype around it with the girls and boys carrying their sticks.” She also hopes the new stadium will help and the uniqueness of the sport interests a lot of people. Also, she would love for there to someday be a middle school team feeding into the high school team, because PBMS does play lacrosse during PE.

Overall, even though it was only the first season of MBHS lacrosse, it has proven to be a great one. The team got along great, playing was so fun, and there was a lot of laughter along the way. The girls improved so much, and we can only hope next year will be even better! Here’s to a great season, Lady Bucs!
