Leslye Martinez

Leslye Martinez is a 17-year-old senior attending Mission Bay High School. She is enjoying her last year as a leader of the M.E.Ch.A club and is very excited to have joined AVID and Journalism. Her goal is to graduate with a 3.5 GPA or higher and attend the University of San Diego to become a Nurse Practitioner or an Anesthesiologist. Martinez has a passion for helping those in need. She considers herself an activist and says that M.E.Ch.A has brought out that activist from within her. Even though it is her last year, she also says it’s the hardest of them all. College apps, scholarships and I.B. classes lead her to less time for being social and having fun. Leslye comments that it is all worth having, because she knows that in college it will pay off and she wants nothing but the best. She would have loved to have joined more clubs and be less shy, because that way she could have met many more people than she already has. Activism is her thing, and you can bet that her articles will say the same; she is a rebel at heart, a rebel against injustices. “I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” – Malcolm X.

Mr. Moody

Mr. Moody

Mr. Moody, Mission Bay’s adviser for the Associated Student Body (A.S.B.), the online newspaper, The Beachcomber at http://beachcombermb.com – and to the award-winning Taroga yearbook, is currently in his 6th year at the Bay. One could best describe him as a very busy man. He keeps his sanity by getting up at 4:30 most mornings to do cardio and lift weights in Point Loma. After school, more than half his time is spent on top of Linda Vista attending the University of San Diego to earn his administrative credential, or as he says, “I’m learning how to be a principal.” A little known fact about Mr. Moody is that he was a foster kid during high school, and got a full ride to college through Foster Care to Success – http://fc2success.org/ – He believes anyone can achieve their dreams if they try hard enough to succeed.

The most intimidating thing he has to face on a day-to-day basis, other than looking in the mirror, is working to educate three diverse groups of Bucs with the highest levels of animation, spirit, and creative control on campus. “The kids aren’t all that intimidating, actually,” he says. “They’re a ton of fun!” For working so close to the beach, he gets there surprisingly rarely, and you’re more likely to find him with his head buried into his iPad drafting another essay or Keynote at a coffee shop.

Moody loves teaching Journalism and his other subjects (his A.S.B. and yearbook would not be pleased if they didn’t get props), and he’s especially happy when his students’ articles get re-blogged and earn views from around the world. Many of his former students have gone on to careers in graphic design, journalism, and entrepreneurship, and that makes him very happy. He’s lucky to have lived in San Diego for almost 9 years, having moved here from Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2003, and he currently resides in Mission Valley. One of his favorite quotes is: “Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain.” – Mark Twain

Mayra Guzman

Mayra Guzman

At Mission Bay High School, Mayra Guzman is taking her second and final year of journalism. Never in her right mind did she think she had the audacity to take a journalism class through her high school years. But as the weeks went by, she realized that writing is a way to let people know about one’s creativity, and soon enough she found out that she wanted to become a writer. When she’s not thinking of what to write about, she likes to listen to her iPod at full blast; artists like, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes, Kings of Leon, Cold War Kids, and Foster the People. She tries not to listen to all the mainstream stuff out there, but she ends up listening to it anyways; it’s everywhere, she can’t help but listen. Her T.V. interests aren’t as different from anyone else. She feels like an average college student when she watches, “Jersey Shore,” or like a stay at home mom in her late 30’s or early 40’s watching, “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” or a middle school kid watching, “iCarly.”

As far as choosing a career, Mayra is indecisive on that subject. She wants to be many things when she’s done with school: writer, veterinarian, photographer, work in the computer field, or something related to criminal justice. But as for now, she is focusing on majoring in computer science at SDSU or UCSD. Either one is okay, but she is striving to land at UCSD. It will be hard for her to leave high school and some friends behind, but she’s willing to take risks to obtain what is right for her and her future.

In class, she wants students to discover their talent of writing and showing it to other students, instead of only their journals knowing their ability to write. She wants to improve on her writing skills and improve on communicating with other people. Mayra hopes to achieve her goals by the end of the school year and will feel accomplished with the difference the class gave her.

Gyasi Redding

Gyasi Redding

Gyasi Redding, Sports Editor for the Beachcomber, is a man of many interests. Even though he dabbles in a plethora of activities, his love for sports burns the brightest. Gyasi is an avid follower of the NFL, and is known for bringing up football in conversations that are completely unrelated to football. Despite the fact that he was born and raised in San Diego, Gyasi is a fan of the New England Patriots, and often argues with friends about why they are the much better team. Thanks to his dad, a Florida native, Gyasi is a loyal supporter of the Miami Heat and Florida Gators. When asked why he refuses to put his faith in San Diego’s teams, he simply replied, “they suck”.

In this world of ever-growing social media, Gyasi is by no means behind the times. Although he cautions not to follow him on Twitter unless you enjoy “frequent comments about cartoons, milk chocolate M&M’s, football, and the occasional angry rant,” Gyasi can also be found on Facebook, but he isn’t sure whether or not his MySpace page still exists.

A senior at MBHS, Gyasi takes his education very seriously. He answered that his favorite part of school is “after,” and shared that lunchtime is usually the highlight of his day. When his goals for the Beachcomber were inquired, he replied, “It’s simple. I want to help create a newspaper everyone will love.” On an unrelated note, Gyasi concluded that he could live entirely off of hummus, pita bread, Nutella, and Ritz Crackers.
