New Coaches for the Boys’ Soccer Season

Along with the new soccer season comes new soccer coaches, and with the tryouts ending all the soccer players are wondering if there are going to be any big changes with the new coaches.

The reason Mission Bays boys’ soccer team has new coaches this year is mainly in part that fourth period athletics is no longer available like it has been in the past years. There was a lot of anger from most athletes with this decision - fourth period athletics gave all athletes more time to practice and train as well as a P.E credit. Domiciano Villa, Junior at Mission Bay High, expressed how he felt about there being no more fourth period athletics, “I really hate how there is no more fourth period athletics, it gave players more time to practice and it really sucks for the students who take the bus because we get home later and so we don’t enough time for homework or projects. If there were fourth period athletics, we would be able to get home earlier and have a better chance at passing our classes.”

The new Varsity soccer coaches are Coach Pablo Bahena and Coach Eric Mondragon. Is getting new coaches a good thing or will it cause difficulties? We asked Senior Daniel Flores, a midfielder for the Varsity Mission Bay soccer team how he felt new coaches would affect the team, “I think getting new coaches will be good for the team because they could teach us new skills, it might be a tough change but I think overall the team will benefit.”

The soccer team is being faced with more changes already; this year they are playing against schools they have never played before, like Gompers Preparatory Academy and Lincoln High School; although it is a change, it should be an interesting experience for the team. They will have a wider knowledge of other high school soccer teams around San Diego. Sadly, none of the soccer games are home games because of the remodeling of the Mission Bay field. This definitely causes concern about students showing up to the games, but we recommend going to as many Mission Bay soccer games as you can to show your support!
