The New And Improved Mission Bay Wrestling Squad
The buzz for the Mission Bay Wrestling team is starting to hype up. With a new motivated wrestling coach, Coach Samuels is trying to recruit as many faces as possible, new and old to get Mission Bay back to its glory days like back in the ’90s, or even 2005 when Mission Bay could have been considered as a power house. Projected to be around 22 wrestlers this year, can the Buccaneers get back to the glory days?
Talking to a former Wrestling coach from 2001-2005, Mr. Sheehy, we asked him how was he able to motivate his team to be so good and to work so hard and never give up? Sheehy said, “That wasn’t really me of course I incorporated some fun workouts in between things but really it was them self-motivated to be good. So I would just keep a positive environment.” We asked him if he had any advice for the 1st time wrestlers at the bay. Sheehy simply said to stick with it, work hard, and learn the fundamentals and they will do fine.
We also spoke with the new Mission Bay wrestling coach, Mr. Samuels who has been wrestling for more than 4o years and has been coaching for 22 years. We asked him what made him want to coach Mission Bay. Samuels said, “I want to revive the program”. With the wrestling team being on a steep decline in the past years, what did he plan on doing to revive the program? Samuels said, “Recruit Recruit, Recruit and to focus on the underclassmen and rely on the seniors to lead the way, step up and be the captains of the team.”
Talking to one of the senior team captains, Joel Rodriguez, we asked him how he felt about the new team. “They don’t know much at all, but as long as they stay dedicated they should all do just fine,” said Rodriguez. When asked about someone who could excel to varsity, he replied, “Alex and Ben Howell they are grasping the fundamentals really fast. In general the whole team is doing well I’m impressed and by the time the season starts hopefully everybody will be in 1A shape.”
So with only four returners, the team is filled with 16 people that have never wrestled before. Even though they’re new, they are eager to learn and hungry to win with the intense workouts not breaking but building their confidence, looking forward to the new and improved Bucs Wrestling this season.
