History for the Lady Bucs

The Mission Bay varsity girls volleyball team has been having a terrific season so far and this past week they had their Senior Night against Mira Mesa. It was their last home game for the year for the Buccaneers. The Bucs have an overall record of 13-10 and their league record is 6-6. They are .500 in league with the win against Mira Mesa.

This Wednesday is the start of the playoffs and they are going to play El Camino for the third time this season - they lost to them both prior times so they hope make the third a charm. They won! According to the co-captain Cassidy Clough, “I feel this year has been a great experience; it has had its ups and downs, but overall it has been the most memorable with the best teammates you could ask for.”

The Bucs have never made it out of the first round but have a good chance to advance past the first round this year. They have four seniors on the team Olivia Olson, Cassidy Clough, Rachel Odermatt and Claudia Norton who are all co-captains on the team. “The team has a lot of young and inexperienced players but they have improved a lot during the year,” said Olivia.

This volleyball team is very positive and encouraging towards each other because when having young varsity players on a team, it takes a lot of skill and knowledge of the game. Rachel Odermatt said, “Sophomores being able to keep up with the team is a big deal as for being on varsity as a sophomore.” So going into the playoffs for the first time for about half the team is going to be a big challenge for them, but something they can overcome.

The Bucs Head Coach Upp has been a great coach and has helped the young varsity players to be ready for the up-and-coming playoffs. The Bucs have never ever made it past the first round in playoffs, but really hope to make it past the first round this year. Olivia Olson said, “I think we have a very good chance to make it out of the first round this year.” History was definitely made Wednesday. After having beaten El Camino, the ladies made it through a first-round playoff game for the first time in almost 10 years. Way to go Lady Bucs!
