During the last previous years Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Almada have been in charge of the popular after school program, cooking class. Many students would stay after school on tuesdays just to go to cooking class. They really enjoyed making the muffins, cakes, chorizo and more. It was something different from the rest of the classes, it released their stress and it just gave students something new to do. I myself would attend cooking class; it all started sophomore year when Mrs. Turner invited me to come check it out, so I went. I ended up loved cooking class. Mrs.Turner and Mrs. Almada were really friendly and they welcomed everyone. They explained step by the step how to cook what was planned for that day. While the main entree was cooking, we would either make desserts, appetizers, or simply clean and set up the table. Kids really enjoyed going to cooking class and this is what leads me to my next statement, I think Mission Bay High School should have cooking class as an elective and not just an after school activity.

Although it may be hard because of the tight budget, I know it’s not impossible. I think a few of the benefits that having cooking class would be that it will unstress the students and it would give the school something new. I have personally talked to Mrs. Turner about it before and she has told me that she would love to teach a home ec class but unfortunately it would be nearly impossible. There’s a few obstacles that would interfere but the biggest reason is that there wouldn’t be enough money to afford all the supplies necessary. Personally, I think that it would be worth giving it a try.

Next year the students will have the choice to pick surfing class as an elective so why shouldn’t cooking class be offered especially since cooking is a skill that will help you in your everyday life. We, the Beachcomber, interviewed Christian Bustos, a senior at Mission Bay High school, about what he thinks about cooking class, “I think that cooking class is great, it brings students together and Mrs. Turner is very nice and friendly. I think that it would be great because it would help students release their stress from all the other classes and give them something else to focus on other than school work. We then asked him if he would sign up for cooking class, “Heck yeah man! It’s something different from school and it would be fun cooking, especially eating it the food haha.”

Cooking class would be a very educational and fun class that most students would enjoy. I hope to see future Mission Bay students being able to have the chance to enjoy cooking class.
