What To Do About the Lack of School Spirit
Mission Bay is not really known for their school spirit. A lot of kids feel like if their friends are not involved, then why should they be? It seems to be the last few years; students have lacked Buccaneer pride such as; not wearing school colors, attending sports activities, participating in spirit weeks, and being involved in any clubs. We want students to feel welcome and comfortable expressing their Buc Pride. It’s disappointing to see how our students can turn their backs to this great school.
We need to figure out a way to get EVERYONE involved, including parents, teachers, etc. Mrs. McGill, Mission Bay’s A.S.B. Advisor feels that, “It has to start with the adults. We need to get our teachers involved.” If some teachers don’t get involved or have any pride for their school, how would the students have spirit? Mission Bay’s A.S.B. also needs to work on getting the word out to students and reaching out to a lot of these freshmen. Juniors, sophomores, and freshmen are the future of this school. They need to be pumped up to LEARN and be at school every day.
Students are getting better today as we speak but, it’s not where we want to be at this point of time. Mission Bay student Lorrie Nguyen had her own opinion about the spirit at this school. “We need to know ahead of time about the upcoming spirit weeks,” said Lorrie Nguyen. That’s up to A.S.B. to change and start getting stuff out there to students and getting them involved as well. A lot of students at Mission Bay participate in the spirit weeks, but there still could be more improvement. “There isn’t any school spirit at this school and we need to fix it,” said Lorrie.
Mission Bay is a really small school and only about 1,300 kids go here. Since there are not that many kids that go to our school, we all know each other. Senior Sekani Thomas at Mission Bay said, “It’s a small school, so a lot of kids just think it’s just another day at MBHS.” Kids ditch because they don’t care and they’re not involved at all. We need to change ourselves before we can change our school. A common misconception is that most kids at our school play sports and that if you don’t play a sport, then you are not a part of the school, well that’s not true! We just need more involvement in clubs and student activities. This could be a start or the beginning of something new for our amazing school.
To conclude, the school spirit at Mission Bay is improving this year. However, the Buccaneers are not where they want to be or where they should be. Hopefully the lack of school spirit at Mission Bay will change for the better in the near future.
