‘Tis the season for seniors at Mission Bay High School to not only plan out their prom proposals, but put them into action. There have already been some bold young men at the school who have asked in outgoing and memorable ways. Prom for Mission Bay High School will be held on Saturday May 31, 2014. The dance starts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening and will be eventful with the Great Gatsby theme at the Bahia Hotel.

We at The Beachcomber interviewed Geronimo Mariscal, grade 12, about his memorable way of asking Jessica Wagner, grade 12, to go to prom with him. Geronimo said he got his proposal idea from his friends Lexi Clark, grade 9, and Vanessa Reed, grade 11, who also attend Mission Bay. Lexi gave him the idea of taking white t-shirts and spelling out “PROM” and have him wear the question mark. He also explained Vanessa was like the director of the scene, she set up Jessica in front of the Buc Cafe where Geronimo had four volunteers walk out behind him spelling out prom. Without any hesitation, he told us that he was nervous because he didn’t know if she would like the proposal and was questioning if she would even say yes. Mr. Mariscal said his plans for prom are to make memories he will be able to tell his children and grandchildren about one day. The last question we had for Geronimo was if it was hard to keep it a secret and if so why or why not? He responded, “It was not hard for me to keep it a secret, because the idea of me asking her was just two days before I asked her. I was able to keep my mouth shut, but I was slightly concerned one of my friends would tell her and ruin the surprise.”

There was another brave soul at Mission Bay High School by the name of Edwin Romero, grade 12, who decided to ask Madison Sweet, grade 11, to prom. This prom-posal took place inside of the Buc Cafe and was a fortunate turnout for Edwin. He made a poster that said “It would be Sweet if you would go to prom with me” On top of that he gave her a bouquet of flowers and had a nice crowd to witness the once in a lifetime event for the two of them. The Beachcomber interviewed Madison Sweet to get not only a girl’s perspective on things, but on top of that, an underclassman point of view on how it was to be asked and her plans.

We began by asking Madison how she felt when Edwin asked her and if she had any idea she would be going to prom this year. She responded, “It was a little overwhelming, but overall it was pretty memorable. I was completely surprised when I walked into the Buc Cafe and he was standing there waiting for me. There was a pretty big crowd and I was blushing really bad, but it was worth it. I have found my dress and can’t wait to hang out with all of my senior friends who will be leaving me to head off into their futures. I am fortunate to be going with such a great guy and I am going to enjoy this dance.”

After speaking with these students from Mission Bay, this year’s Prom for the class of 2014 will be all for the memories and last moments together before they all head off in different directions. Gatsby will be awaiting their arrival at the Bahia and expecting nothing less than for them to have a fantastic night.
