Maleficent is a recently released film about the evil villain from the Disney story Sleeping Beauty. The film was released on May 30th, 2014 and made an astonishing $69.4 million on it’s opening weekend.

Maleficent takes a different twist to the favorable classic Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent is a fairy with beautiful, huge wings who was always sweet and kind until she met a boy, Stefan, who cut off her wings so he could become king. Maleficent is angry so in revenge she goes to Stefan’s castle on the day of Stefan’s daughter’s birth celebration and casts a curse on her. The curse is that on the day of her 16th birthday she’ll get pricked by a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep-like death that can only be awoken by true loves kiss. Maleficent follows around the little girl, Aurora, and is surprised by herself that she actually starts caring for her. The big twist in this movie is very suspenseful that you must see to believe.

The producers couldn’t have picked a better actress to play Maleficent. Angelina Jolie played a role of a lifetime. This film could’ve made a lot less money if any other actress was the main star but the fact that it was Jolie made the film as big as it is. A fun fact is that Angelina Jolie’s very own five year old daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, played the role of five year old Aurora. We, the Beachcomber, asked Diana Suarez, a freshman here at Mission Bay High School, how she felt about the movie, “I think it was a very interesting movie and not too little kid-ish like it could have been.” We also asked senior Ines Lopez her feelings towards the film, “I loved Sleeping Beauty since I was little so being able to see this movie is pretty cool. I like what it’s about and Angelina Jolie made the film feel so real with her evil laugh and facial expressions. It’s worth the $12 dollars at the movie theaters.”

Disney movies seem to get very popular no matter what but this film seems to get a lot of recognition even though it’s not the typical animated film. Angelina Jolie seems to have a big impact on this film bu the plot is also very interesting and it will get you hooked in. It’s most definitely a must see film for this year.
