Remember the lines: “I am Sam. Sam I am. Do you like green eggs and Ham?” From Doctor Seuss; or the first sentence from The Giver, “It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.” I would like to think that we all have read at least 3 books in our lives.
Communications and media have taken over the entertainment of most kids, teens and adults, and we’re not to blame! TV is for sure a very fun and entertaining thing to watch. We get our minds out of our reality, or just to pass the “free” time that we have. But aren’t books the same thing? I mean, before TV made an appearance, books meant everything to people. And like some of us have learned in Mr. Moody’s American Literature class, books have a lot of influence on our culture. For example, Huck Finn’s character in Mark Twain’s book.
Watching TV is fun, but being able to imagine a setting or even a person, expands imagination’s limits even more. Reading helps us not only to be more informed, it actually helps in developing new skills for school. For example:
- When you read, you learn new words to impress your teacher.
- When you read, you have support for your opinions.
- When you read, you don’t waste as much money on books as you may think .
- When you read, you can read anywhere, without needing a charger.
- When you read, you get to talk about good novels that may become films.
- When you read, you get to travel using imagination to different places in the world and that could encourage your desire for travel.
So there you go, reading is actually pretty cool. And you don’t need to read 3 books every week; that is another great thing about books. You can take your time; you can read a much as you like or do routines for it.
Reading is a very important skill that we need to at least learn to like. Once someone decides to pursue a higher education, reading becomes as important as drinking water. And if we practice it before that moment, then we will be prepared for anything.
At Mission Bay School, you can go to the library and check out a book for free!
Good Luck!
