BΔSTILLE “BΔD BLOOD” OUT NOW
You may not have heard of them yet, but if you lived in the United Kingdom you would know the lyrics to all their songs, and very soon you’re going to be hearing this band everywhere you go. Bastille is an indie pop band that has become the new biggest musical group in Britain. After just three years, they are already seeing major success. Their album ‘Bad Blood’ that was released in March has made a quarter of a million in sales, still remaining in the UK top 10 and their tickets for their newly announced UK tour sold all 44,000 tickets in just one day.
Bastille’s new album “Bad Blood” is filled with 15 poppy songs. The album itself is very unique sounding, with upbeat sound and lyrics that actually have meaning. and it’s good to hear something different play on the radio that’s not about hooking up with the hottest chick and getting money.
Their hit single “Pompeii”, that has 35 million views on YouTube, is being blasted all throughout the UK and even in some radio stations here in San Diego. There is much hype over this new single, it has tribal beats that are very uplifting all while getting you to think about your life. What I see is one of the best things about Pompeii and much of their other songs is that their lyrics are open for interpretation, letting people find inspiration within their music.
For example the chorus of Pompeii, “And if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?” could have different meanings to different people, it all depends on how you look at it. The track they named their album off “Bad Blood” as well as “Laughter Lines” tell pretty vivid stories about memories of a past relationship that didn’t end too well. Although most people like the love sick, I’m-so-sensitive type of songs because they can relate to them, the theme is played out through the entire album, and when you’re listening to album at once it feels like almost every song is the same, which can get you pretty bored.
Daniel Smith started Bastille as a solo project and later decided he wanted to form a band with him as the lead singer. The other four members of Bastille are Kyle Simmons on the keyboard and bass, William Farquarson on the acoustic guitar and Chris “Woody” Wood playing the drums. Smith has always been a quiet fellow, spending much of teenage years writing music by himself and never believed his music was good enough. After college, Smith met Simmons, Farquarson, and Wood and Bastille was born. They have since been touring all over the U.K, making the most out of their sucess.
I see why this band is popular, especially to the so-called “hipsters” and I believe that they have a lot of potential. It’s impressive how popular they’ve gotten in as little as three years, and while I much rather listen to this band than meaningless rap songs on the radio talking about getting girls, I hope to hear more diversity with their songs. I believe they will become the next big band and become very popular here in the United States just like they are in the United Kingdom. Get ready to start hearing the name Bastille all over the place, they’re getting popular and getting popular fast.
