Historically, Mission Bay High School has been a high school where many surfers have gone and graduated from, surfing through all four years of their high school life. Famous surfers and shapers, Skip Frye and Ernie Higgins are among some of the surfing alumni. The surfing culture lives on at Mission Bay with a group of new students who strive to keep the Mission Bay surf culture alive.
This year specifically has been huge in the revival of Mission Bays surfing community; with the help of Coach Farrar, the Mission Bay surf team has been re-created for the first time in three years. This is a huge accomplishment for Mission Bays surfing community because it has reintroduced a timeless pastime for our school and many other schools. Our surf team consists of twelve members including Gabe Goff, Zack and Joey Wozniak, Justin Myron, Declan Saldana, Hunter Ketchum, Jake Armstrong, Adam Lee, John Martinez, Mikeala Saili, Alannah Weatherly, and their coach, Greg Farrar. As a team, they compete in surf competitions during the weekends.
Not only do the students at Mission Bay surf on a regular basis, a number of the staff members are also long-time members of the surfing community with years of experience. From administration to teaching staff, our school has a large group if staff members that surf. Some of the staff member who surf are Greg Farrar, Mr. Michaelian our vice principal, one of our Spanish teachers, Mr. Orloff, the business teacher Mr. West, one of Mission Bay’s counselors, Mr. Schwartz, the junior I.B. Biology teacher, Mr. Corbin, the Buc TV manager, Mr. Caligiuri, and finally one of our English teachers, Mr. Cramer. They keep this school’s surfing culture alive and well.
Keep sharing that friendly conversation in the hall with your surfing teacher of choice, tell them where you surfed this weekend and how it was, ask them where they have been surfing. This way we can keep a mutual respect and understanding between student surfers and the teachers who surf.
