In It for the Ring

After a tremendously devastating loss against Mount Miguel High School last year in the 2011 CIF Championships, Mission Bay’s own Varsity Girls Basketball team the Lady Bucs are preparing for what could be a shocking and emotional comeback. These girls have spent their summer working out, training, and playing on various club teams; working hard, leaving no room for simple mistakes.

Basketball isn’t just a sport to them it’s more like LIFE! It doesn’t come around just in the winter like school sports it’s a year round activity for these athletes. Keyahndra  Cannon , a senior on the team, was signed  to the University of Arizona . While most students are waiting to hear back from colleges, she is enjoying the fact that she is already an Arizona Wildcat. Now just because her graduation and college experience is around the corner, doesn’t mean that winning the CIF Championship wouldn’t be a plus. “It’s my senior year in high school, regardless if I’m signed or not I want to end off the year with a bang and that would be crossing the stage at graduation with a CIF Ring.” With that much drive and determination it would lead you to think about the freshmen on the team and how do they handle the pressure.  Briajunae Shepard feels no pressure she says, “Winning CIF would be great for me too so It’s not like I’m in it for the seniors, I’m working towards that goal for me.” According to her she was brought to the team for her dribble and shot. This 5’6 athlete has an amazing attitude and is on a great track to success here at Mission Bay.

Last year with a lost to Mount Miguel High, it left our team devastated. But they didn’t give up! They replayed the tapes, found what they did wrong, and worked hard to fix their mistakes. Now it’s time for them to step up to the plate and fight for what they really want, the ring. The Beachcomber is proud to say that we fully support our Girls Basketball Team and wish them the best of luck, climbing up the big mountain of success and reaching their goal.
