The “Day of Love” is coming! Ever wonder what others think about the holiday?
The Beachcomber “dug through hearts and chocolate” to give you more insight  about Valentine’s Day!
Every February 14th, people around the world celebrate their loved ones, by exchanging flowers, kisses, cards, candy, balloons, etc. in the name of Saint Valentine.  But who is this Valentine guy? Many theories have been suggested regarding the origins of this holiday.  According to the most prominent legends, Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century.  During this time, it was outlawed for young soldiers to be married. Having a heart, Saint Valentine performed marriages in secret for those young couples. His activities were discovered and Saint Valentine was put to death. Other legends say that Saint Valentine was a prisoner who fell in love with the jailor’s daughter and wrote letters to her signed; “From your Valentine.” Regardless of the difference in details, all legends accord that Saint Valentine was very romantic, and that this day is celebrated on February 14th,  the date when Saint Valentine was buried.

So what do MB students think of Valentine’s Day? “I love that day! It’s so romantic!” Mike Mize said, “I would hate it, if I didn’t have a girlfriend though; I mean who wants to be alone that day?” he added.  The Beachcomber found out many students feel that way; couples view it as a sweet and romantic day, while single people find the day pretty silly. Also, many people described Valentine’s Day as too commercialized and overdone.  “Why do you need a certain day to express your feelings for someone?” asked Ashley Perez-Rodriguez, “You can use any day to tell someone; I love you.”
So according to MB students, Valentine’s Day is a little exaggerated, but don’t we still like getting a greeting card, a flower or even some chocolate? Yes, yes we do. Every year, around 1 billion greeting cards are sent, which makes Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending occasion of the year.
This year, Mission Bay High School gave you the opportunity to by a rose, which will be delivered during advisory on Valentine’s Day. Did you order one for your sweetheart?
