As families struggle to get through the day, with Christmas getting closer, it isn’t going to get any easier. Parents will be doing whatever it takes to see that smile on their child’s face, but with today’s economic downfall not every child will be smiling. As we make a Christmas list with all the new gadgets, some child out there would be happy just to receive the toys at the bottom of our closet.

Toys for Tots is a charity of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve that collects donated toys to give to children in poverty at Christmas.  After 2010’s campaign, more than 16.7 million toys had been distributed to nearly 7.2 million children. This year, the organization will be expecting even more families than the previous year. With the increase of those in need, our participation becomes vitally important.

For 2011, the Mission Bay MCJROTC is helping out with this foundation. We have our very own collection agency here on the Mission Bay High campus. When asked to sum up his thoughts on Toys 4 Tots here, Lt. Colonel Josten simply responded, “It’s great to contribute to kids in San Diego.”

“I will be donating some toys this year because it is for a really good cause,” said senior Jen Davis. “I hope whomever receives my toy will have a huge smile on their face,” she continued.
Also, Jerald Albritton commented, “I am very fortunate to have the things I have and knowing that there are people out there that are in need, I will do anything I can to help.”
These seniors are two of the many who donate to the Toys for Tots foundation; you too can join them as they help kids around the world have a better Christmas. These boxes are located throughout the school: in the front office, in the A.S.B. room, in the library, and 2 in the MCJROTC area. The toys must be new and unwrapped and toys for all ages are welcome. The boxes will be out all the way until the break, then, they will be collected by Lt. Colonel Josten and taken over to the Toys for Tots headquarters. These toys will be received by those who have applied through the Toys for Tots website.
If you are a member of a family in need or know someone in need, be sure to visit the Toys for Tots website ( www.toysfortots.org ). By going to this website, you can enter your information and request toys.
