The winter season is filled with many interesting qualities that people fall in love with, whether it’s the brisk cold air, smell of Christmas trees, or the festive food cooking in the oven or on your stove tops. Many people have myriad things they favor during the holidays season from celebrating their religious occasions or just celebrating time they get with their family. While students get two weeks off to enjoy this marvelous time of the year, the kids at Mission Bay High School they enjoy a diversity of events.

Music is a big part of the holiday season – each religious group or non-religious group comes together at one point to hear carols or songs celebrating this time of the year. From Jingle Bells, a holiday classic for most Americans, to other songs like Silent Night, music is a key part in the holiday season.  This is Malachi Johnson’s favorite part not only because of the vast range of music, but because this is the best time for musicians to make money, he said, “I like the holidays because everyone hires musicians to play music for their parties and such.” This is one of the key components to the holiday that reaches the hearts of students at Mission Bay High School.
Another big to-do around the holidays is all the houses decorated in beautiful lights that shine brightly as they are wrapped around houses with other extravagant decorations. Maile Saili added, “I love all the pretty lights they are so bright and pretty.”  It’s amazing how the lights brighten up people’s moods and it’s like shining hope and optimism through people’s blood. Almost as if the lights have magical quality of lighting up the darkness, coincidentally people turn on their holiday lights while its dark out.
Next thing that students love about the holidays is the fact that there is no school and they get to sleep in. This seems to be something that is greatly agreed upon at Mission Bay High School, but then again who doesn’t like not having work and getting to sleep in?  Several students, such as, Max Ramirez, Leno Ramon, Philip Pieper, and Julian Phelps said, “I like that there is no school!”  While Derrick Pham adds, “I like getting to sleep.” These two features of the holidays are vastly well liked by everyone who works hard or just doesn’t like working.
Another thing even bigger than the lack of school and then being able to sleep, is the opportunity that students get to spend time with family and friends. More times than not students are swamped with homework and events for school these seasonal breaks which are the perfect opportunity to get to spend time with the ones they love and the ones they miss greatly.  Coral Ramirez said, “I like spending time with family; it’s the most important thing.” Many students agreed with her, such as Monae Price, Kierra Phipps, Montserrat Ramos, Adeline Ortiz, Dani-lynn Ott, and Mykaila Allen. All these students find the time they can allot to their family especially wonderful and special that it becomes their favorite thing about the holidays.
Lastly, the warm feeling in your home and all the holiday movies on television is a big favorite of students. They love how inviting their home is, getting to curl up with a warm blanket in front of the T.V.  Watching all the miracles that happen in the movies, especially the tear-jerking films, which usually hit home with sensitive people. Denise Phan said, “I like the Christmas movies during the winter season.”  The movies also add a certain essence to the holiday season – that of hope, dreams, and miracles.
There are many things the students at Mission Bay High School favor about the holidays with the masses favoring one or two things more than the other, but everyone seems to like the winter break and winter season for many different reasons. Summing up how most students feel, Jenny Nguyen said, “First, you get off school. Then, you have time with your family. In addition, the warm and happy feeling you get during the holidays.  Even the days when you get to sit around and drink hot chocolate while watching holiday movies.” This is what most people like about the holidays that are up and coming. Happy Holidays!
