One of the best photographers, if not the best, to currently attend Mission Bay High is Matthew Lawson. His breath-taking photos have been shown in the San Diego Reader and he has done a photo-shoot for San Diego Home Living. His portfolio consists of hundreds of beautiful pictures of San Diego and France. One would have to ask, how does one get started in such a field? “I started when my mom got her first camera, and hundreds of pictures later, I realized I had something.” Matthew is also an exceptional photo editor, a true Photoshop pro.“I enjoy editing pictures, and I enjoy it even more when they’re my own pictures.” Matthew has been doing photography for more than a year. When asked what has motivated him all this time, “It has been more of a hobby. There has never been a bad time in photography, I’m always improving. What motivates me the most is when I see such good pictures, and it makes me want to improve even more.”

There are a lot of careers that become available when you enter the field of photography. You could be a Digital Pre-press Operator or a Digital Re-toucher. You could do portraits, scenery, runways, and also take pictures for newspapers and magazines. “I would like to freelance and sell my work to companies and magazines. It’s more of an independent job, so I can maintain my own creativity and be able to take pictures of whatever I desire,” Matthew said when asked where he hopes photography will take him. Only 16 years old, Matthew Lawson has the skills and experience of some twice his age.

Here are some tips for aspiring photographers from Matthew himself:
·         Learn all your cameras features. NEVER use auto settings.
·         If your photos start to impress you, you’re getting better.
·         Just because your camera is expensive, it doesn’t mean your pictures are going to be great.
