Bird’s Surf SHED, located on 1091 West Morena Blvd. is possibly the most unique surf shop in all of San Diego County. Bird’s is a surf shop like no other, being built into an old military Quonset hut, it almost immediately intrigues the common passerby or the seasoned surfing veteran, and everyone in-between. “This place is amazing! I have never seen anything like it,” said John Hale upon his first visit also commenting that “this will not be my last time coming in here.”  Lined from the floor to the tallest arc of the roof with classic and vintage surfboards, you are immediately overtaken by the sheer immensity of what is all around you. Older surfers will start to recognize brands they remember from “back in the day” and the younger generation will appreciate the designs and innovation that have led to what we know today as a surfboard. Johnny Hale said that he “couldn’t believe there were so many amazing deals hidden in this place” and that all the boards were so “bitchen.”

The owner of Birds Surf SHED is none the less Bird Huffman. Bird was born and raised in San Diego and knows the ins and outs of San Diego surfing history and culture. Mr. Huffman was originally the owner of the Southcoast Boardshop in Pacific Beach, and he has taken his skills for running a legit surf shop and added back in the lost aspect of a place – not just to buy things – but also to hang out and talk surfing. He loves to talk story and will almost always greet you right when you enter with a “hey how are ya” or a “howdy”. Bird is fascinated by the surfing culture and always likes to look at people’s classic and new boards. Owning one of the largest – if not the largest – surfboard collection in all of San Diego, he will appraise your vintage boards for free, and if he likes them enough, you might just be made an offer for it on the spot. In the back of Bird’s is a shaping room that he allows people to rent out by the hour, well-known shapers such as Hank Warner and Ernie Higgins have shaped in this room and approve of its design.

At the SHED you can find new and used boards, also you can put boards on consignment to be sold with only a small percentage taken as a selling cost. You can also find a variety of wetsuit and clothing brands including Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Brixton and Bulky Boy, or you can purchase some Birds Surf SHED clothing; anything to suit your personal surfing needs can be found. All in all I highly recommend making a trip to Birds Surf Shed down in Bay Park; it will be a place you can never forget.
