Students and Their Cars

Many different cars populate the Mission Bay parking lot on any given day. One can see old cars, new cars, big cars, small cars, gas guzzlers, economy cars, all of different makes models and colors. There is so much variety, in fact, that it could be used to show the diversity at Mission Bay itself. Jeeps, Hondas, Toyotas, Volkswagens, everything meets in the school parking lot. In this issue, we got to go a little deeper, and get to know the people behind the cars: what they use it for, if they pay for them, and most important of all, if they named them.
C.J. Rayford’s owns Geo Tracker affectionately named Lola. He pays for insurance, gas, everything. He drives, as he put it, “to raves, games, around, everywhere.” Canaan Cruz, on the other hand, doesn’t pay for anything. His dad bought his 1990 Acura Legend for $1800, and does not pay for his insurance, gas, and car repairs. His car is “to get from point A to point B.” Yet, they both want new cars, a common trend with all the students at Mission Bay.
There are no real “beaters” in the parking lot fitting the traditional definition of “a junky old car,” yet Thega Berhe’s car is the closest to fitting this definition. Her car, a Ford Crown Victoria creatively named Victoria, is a junker. She described it as “having character,” which is true, even though it looks like on old police car. It also currently isn’t running. Clare Saldana’s car, on the other hand, has character in a completely different way. Her 1963 AMC Rambler, which she described as “a beast,” is a classic car. She had to buy it for $2000, and had to pay for all the repairs, gas, and insurance. Out of everyone the Beachcomber interviewed, Claire is the only one who said “no way Jose” to the prospect of a newer or cooler car.
There is a lot of diversity in the cars at Mission Bay. Many students at this school want new cars, or need new cars, but it gives this school character. When people drive by Mission Bay, they should say “Whoa, they have rad cars, their school must be awesome.”
